Director of Engineering

DriSteem Corporation, a division of Research Products Corporation designs and manufactures humidification systems to meet the unique requirements of health care, industrial, process-critical, commercial and residential applications worldwide.  DriSteem’s reputation as the humidification industry leader is the result of over 50 years of product excellence, innovation, and responsive customer service.  We are currently seeking a Director of Engineering to join our team in Eden Prairie, MN.  This position will be a member of the Executive Team reporting to the President.


The Director of Engineering oversees DriSteem’s new product engineering, continuation engineering, and value engineering. The Director of Engineering is a member of DriSteem’s executive team that develops and executes long-term strategy, annual operating plans and annual budgets.  The position requires a hands-on approachable player-coach leader with the ability to inspire, motivate and empower others while offering focused leadership in ambiguous circumstances. 


  • Collaborate with Product Management, Sales and Marketing to lead development of market-driven new products, features and technologies in accordance with the strategic plan.
  • Promote a culture and structure in the engineering department to actively pursue continuous improvement of existing product features, product manufacturability, and value.
  • Promote and lead continuous improvement of engineering business processes in collaboration with other business functions within DriSteem.
  • Develop and lead a culture of close collaboration and open professional communications between all business functions at DriSteem.
  • Lead by example to create and maintain a culture of high expectations, integrity, accountability and execution.
  • Collaborate with the executive management team to develop and execute the annual strategic plan and product development roadmap.
  • Provide technical intelligence to the organization such as competitive product feedback, technical and regulatory changes in the HVAC industry, technology assessment, changes in building codes and engineering design codes.
  • Develop and maintain a deep understanding of competitors’ products and capabilities.


  • Actively manage and support the engineering staff. Set clear expectations, monitor progress, evaluate results and react accordingly.
  • Mentor staff on professional development such as communication skills and time management. Provide professional development opportunities.
  • Conduct annual performance reviews. Develop and communicate plans for individual employee improvement.
  • Lead the engineering department in managing and executing multiple projects simultaneously. Ensure that adequate resources are allocated correctly to execute all engineering operations.
  • Act decisively to correct poor performance and deal with conflict. Give timely, objective, and constructive feedback.  Apply appropriate resolution (directing, training, counseling, empowering, or coaching).
  • Continually develop new capabilities in staff; challenge status quo, promote debate, coach better decision making.
  • Develop and maintain performance metrics for the engineering group to communicate expectations, monitor results and resolve problems.
  • Manage strategy for evaluation and processing of custom design requests from customers (Engineer to Order).
  • Lead the engineering team in continuous development of DriSteem’s product configuration software (Configurator) and supporting development of DriSteem’s sales software (DriCalc).
  • Lead the engineering team in supporting development of DriSteem’s sales software (DriCalc) and directly manage the continuous development of DriSteem’s product configuration software (Configurator).
  • Lead the engineering team in supporting DriSteem’s Tech Services Department to resolve field issues.
  • Encourage and promote design for manufacturability for existing products as well as new products in development.
  • Collaborate with operations to support continuous process and improvement and the implementation of new products.
  • Effectively utilize contract employees and manage agreements and relationships.
  • Understand, manage and continuously improve the Engineering Change Order process.
  • Manage industry trade association relationships (ie. ASHRAE, AHRI) and maintain all required agency approvals (ie. AHSI, UL, CE) in a timely manner.
  • Manage corporate intellectual property. Lead the patent application and maintenance process within the framework of the strategic plan and annual budget to protect corporate IP and provide competitive advantage.
  • Consistently provide updates to the executive team on engineering activities such as progress of development projects, engineering changes, innovation ideas, patent activity and resource allocation.
  • Collaborate with corporate central services to optimize corporate resource allocation and use?
  • Promote and adhere to DriSteem’s ISO 9001 procedures.


  • Develop and manage an annual budget for the Engineering Department in alignment with DriSteem’s long-term strategic plan and annual operating goals.
  • Utilize sound judgment in controlling expenses and promote fiscal responsibility to the engineering team.
  • Ensure timely and accurate expense reporting.
  • Assist the technical support department to quickly resolve outstanding field service issues while managing associated expenses. 



  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent related experience.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive engineering management experience gained in a related HVAC product design and manufacturing business environment.
  • Experience managing new product development using management techniques and tools to ensure we meet deadlines while creating high value products.
  • Experience developing products suitable for European, Middle East and Latin American applications is preferred.
  • Demonstrate aptitude for continuous improvement of existing products and business processes.
  • Experience managing off-shore technical resources.
  • Experience working with industry organizations such as AHRI and ASHRAE is preferred.
  • Experience working with agency and regulatory approvals such as ETL, UL, CE, EMC, LVD, GAR, and SCAQMD preferred.
